Description

The Gateway at UC Berkeley is a new campus building for the College of Computing, Data Science, and Society designed to support collaboration and innovation. Beyond serving as an academic and research facility, Gateway was developed to model forward-thinking sustainable building operations. The building integrates high-performance design, shared community spaces such as seven social kitchens, and operational systems that prioritize resource efficiency and long-term environmental responsibility within daily campus life.
A central feature of Gateway is its commitment to zero waste. The Gateway team, which includes Cal Zero Waste, Gateway building managers, Turner Construction, and Groundforce Waste Hauling, is working toward TRUE Zero Waste certification by aiming to divert over 90% of waste from landfill through thoughtful purchasing, standardized waste infrastructure, composting and recycling systems, and ongoing education for building occupants. Departments, staff, students, and facilities teams are collaborating to reduce single-use materials, improve sorting practices, and support circular resource use throughout operations. Gateway serves as a living laboratory for zero-waste implementation at UC Berkeley, demonstrating how large institutional buildings can embed waste reduction into both design and everyday behavior.
