Name
Designing for Sensory Comfort: High-Performance Strategies and POE at Villa Esperanza Phase II
Date & Time
Thursday, May 28, 2026, 11:15 AM - 12:15 PM
Description
Villa Esperanza Services in Pasadena supports children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (including Down syndrome and autism) through education, therapy, and life-skills programs. In this session, Practice Labs presents Villa Esperanza Phase II (completed end of 2024) as a case study in how high-performance design can be paired with sensory-informed, neuro-inclusive strategies to foster calm, orientation, and emotional safety.
We will share how a small team used integrated analysis to shape envelope, shading, and ventilation while supporting sensory comfort through daylighting and glare control, acoustic performance, indoor air quality, durable non-toxic materials, and therapeutic landscape and indoor-outdoor transitions. The campus targets AIA 2030 benchmarks at a 90% reduction from baseline, with a predicted EUI of 11.2 kBtu/sf-yr and a 17-kW rooftop PV system offsetting a significant share of operational energy.
The session also previews our post-occupancy evaluation (POE) approach for Phase II—comparing measured performance and occupant experience against pre-design building science assumptions. Attendees will leave with a pragmatic toolkit for applying measurable comfort and wellbeing targets, selecting healthier lower-carbon materials, and setting up a POE plan that improves future projects and strengthens equity outcomes in community-serving facilities.
