Speaker Bio
Jessica Heiges (she/her) is a circular economy expert with over a decade of experience driving systemic transitions toward waste free systems. She is the Senior Sustainability Program Manager in Circularity for Genentech, where she manages initiatives to increase material reuse (either on campus or through external partners) and decrease the amount of material going to landfills. These initiatives span campus operations, including research labs, clinical trial manufacturing, cafeterias, and offices. Additionally, Genentech is undergoing a large revisioning of its South San Francisco campus, where the deconstruction of dozens of buildings and the construction of buildings have the goals of diverting 90% of material from landfill and reusing 15% of that material. Prior to Genentech, Jessica was a sustainability consultant, supporting multinational clients in creating and standardizing waste accounting methodologies, obtaining TRUE Zero Waste and UL 2799 zero waste certifications for offices and data centers, conducting life cycle analyses for waste reduction strategies, and implementing circularity best practices. Her work focused on supporting clients at a global scale to reduce the amount of waste generated in their operations. Jessica earned her PhD in Environmental Science, Policy, and Management from UC Berkeley, where her doctoral research focused on the sustainable and just transitions required to achieve zero waste systems. Her academic background is deeply rooted in practical application; she holds a Master of Development Practice in zero waste and a Graduate Certificate in food systems. While at UC Berkeley, Jessica authored numerous peer-reviewed publications in high-impact journals such as the Journal of Cleaner Production and Environmental Innovation and Societal Transitions. Her research has explored the efficacy of anti-single-use ordinances, the impacts of China’s "Operation National Sword" policy on U.S. recycling, and the resurrection of single-use plastics during the COVID-19 pandemic. Furthermore, during her master's, she was the co-lead to make UC Berkeley's Chou Hall (Haas School of Business) the first TRUE Zero Waste academic building in the world.
