Pritzlaff Conservation Center
Built in 2016, the 11,500 square foot Pritzlaff Conservation Center, designed by architect Doug Singletary is the epicenter for the Garden’s conservation activities.
More than 20% of materials are regional and have recycled content including rock for walls and garden beds sourced on site by either salvaging from structures that had burned down in the Jesusita Fire in 2009 or unearthed while installing water and sewer lines. No wood is used in the entire building.
Three underground cisterns collect 45,000 gallons of storm water runoff from the building and parking lot for irrigation. Water is funneled through a bioswale to remove dirt, debris, and chemical residues before it is stored.
Solar panels cover the rooftop and second floor patio, providing at least 70% of the power needed for the building.
Santa Barbara Botanic Garden
Discover California’s diverse natural landscapes at Santa Barbara Botanic Garden, a 78-acre living museum designed entirely with native plants.
It is divided into 11 sections, showcasing habitats ranging from an arid desert and rocky canyon to a lush redwood forest and tranquil arroyo. In spring, the iconic meadow bursts with bright-orange California poppies and other wildflowers.
Among the garden’s must-see features are a peaceful Meadow Pond, the historic Mission Dam and Aqueduct, and a Ceremonial Teahouse, and the Pritzlaff Conservation Center. The Backcountry, spanning 4.5 acres along Mission Creek, recreates California’s remote, open landscapes.
This interactive space invites all ages to connect with native plants, featuring diverse terrains and habitats inspired by SoCal.
