Description

The charette gives an introduction to Circularity Design Principles at varying scales and practices circular design thinking using the real-world case study of the Santa Monica Airport Conversion project. Circularity is a design-thinking muscle that needs to be exercised by all professions in the building environment from owners, operators, designers, contractors, and jurisdictions. To accomplish this, groups will be dealt Circular Design Opportunity cards as mini briefs that provide context, data, and a design question that interrogates our current practices at material, building, policy scale. Participants may be asked to imagine new uses for common materials or brainstorm workflows and policies that are conducive to a circular economy. Regardless of the challenge at hand, the work generated will contribute to the emerging and relevant body of knowledge around local, just, and environmentally responsible practices of taking care of our built environment. Circular SoCal is a collaboration effort by the City of Santa Monica with AIA-LA and Carbon Leadership Forum - LA.
